The company also announced the appointment of Jim Elliott, Vice President, Memory Marketing & Product Planning, Samsung Semiconductor, Inc. to the Initiative's board of directors.

Together, Samsung and the other industry-leading members of the Initiative will work to increase the adoption of energy-efficient PCs and servers, while raising awareness of the value of energy-efficient computer power management.

Samsung said it will initially concentrate on increasing the power-efficiency of servers and notebooks through more energy-efficient components like 30nm-class* DDR3 memory (www.samsung.com/GreenMemory) and solid state drives (www.samsung.com/SSD) using 20nm-class* NAND flash memory, as well as highly energy-efficient LED display panels, application processors and advanced process manufacturing.

“Samsung had shown a great deal of sensitivity toward reducing the energy consumed in the manufacturing of its products and in increasing the efficiency that those products bring to consumers and to its enterprise customers,” said George Goodman, executive director, Climate Savers Computing Initiative. “By working with Climate Savers Computing, Samsung is taking another major step in leading the movement toward a cleaner and more sustainable future.”

“Through the oversight role that it will play in CSCI, Samsung is demonstrating a strong commitment to furthering the adoption of green semiconductor technology across the globe,” said Bill Weihl, vice president, Climate Savers Computing Initiative and green energy czar, Google. “Samsung’s active participation paves the way for other companies to take a closer look at how they can help to dramatically reduce global CO2 emissions and cost of ownership for their IT operations.”

The Climate Savers Computing Initiative's goal is to promote the development, deployment and adoption of smart technologies that can both improve the efficiency of power delivery of a computing system and reduce the energy consumed when the system is in an inactive state.  In offices, homes and data centers, the added heat from inefficient computers can increase the demand on air conditioners and cooling systems, making the computing equipment even more expensive to run, wasting a large percentage of their input power.
